1. What differentiates Medical WeightLoss and Wellness from other weight loss programs?

Medical WeightLoss & Wellness clinics are dedicated exclusively to providing our proven and effective weight loss program to the communities we serve. Our medically supervised program consists of a dynamic combination of adherence to a ketogenic diet (real food from local grocery stores), vitamin injections, oral vitamin supplements, supportive counseling by a nurse, prescriptive therapy (optional and only if medically indicated). We not only provide our patients with a roadmap for achieving their weight loss goals, but also the much needed guidance and support required for lasting success. We are dedicated to not only helping you lose weight quickly, safely, and sensibly, but most importantly, we are committed to helping you make lifestyle changes that will result in a lifetime of health.

Weight loss is the only focus of our practice. You will always follow-up with a knowledgeable, experienced nurse. We are here to counsel, encourage, educate, challenge and coach you. This is our dream job and it shows! It is our goal to change your mindset. We want to shift from a “diet” mentality – which implies temporary, to a “lifestyle change” – which implies permanence.

2. What is a "ketogenic" (keto) diet and is it healthy for me?

Absolutely! There is nothing “gimmicky” about our ketogenic (high fat, moderate protein, very low carb) way of eating. Our list of approved food items consist of lean and semi-lean proteins as well as fruits and vegetables (good carbs). This is all food you purchase at your local grocery store or farmer’s market. There are no pre-packaged meals or meal replacement shakes/bars. By eating this way we work to break the carb addiction cycle, regulate hunger hormones and improve overall health and well being.

Rather than relying on willpower, calorie counting, limiting portion sizes or extreme exercise, the ketogenic diet works because it changes the very “fuel source” your body uses to stay energized: namely, from burning glucose (carbs/sugar) to burning your own body fat for fuel. It is this process that allows most people to lose weight at a more rapid and consistent pace.

There are many evidence based health benefits to adhering to a ketogenic diet. Some of the many benefits include: increased memory, cognition, clarity; less migraines; fighting some types of cancer; preventing heart disease (lower blood pressure, lower triglycerides, better cholesterol profiles); decreasing bodily inflammation; improving energy levels and sleep; keeping uric acid levels in check (helping kidney function and preventing gout); battling a wide variety of neurologic and metabolic diseases; assisting women’s health (increased fertility, stabilizing hormones); curbing diabetes, obesity, and metabolic syndrome while sparing muscle loss.

4. I am on several medications & have multiple health issues; can I still participate in this  program?

There are no medications or health issues that negatively interact with the Medical WeightLoss & Wellness way of eating. We may need to make minor adjustments based on medical history, however, this does not eliminate the ability to participate. When you come in for your initial appointment, the nurse practitioner will thoroughly review your medical history and discuss any concerns with you.

5. How often do I have to visit the clinic?

During the “active” weight loss phase we suggest you follow-up weekly.  This weekly follow-up will allow for optimal results. In addition, our teaching/counseling will lead to discussion about habits and explore reasons behind poor eating choices or over-eating.  Overall, follow-up is a MAJOR reason for the success we see at MWLW.  Typical follow-up appointments last anywhere from 10-15 minutes.

7. Will I really lose weight on this program and how fast?

Yes, if you do this program as we instruct, you will lose weight.  Rate of loss depends on how well you adhere to the program and follow-up appointments.  Typically, our committed patients will lose 5-10 lbs. the first week and may lose up to 12-20 lbs. during the first month!  Loss throughout subsequent months range from 5- 15 lbs. (again, depending on adherence, weight to lose, metabolic resistance).

9. What are the injections and medications used for and do I have to be worried they will be habit-forming?

We primarily use the FDA-approved appetite suppressant Phendimetrazine.  Phendimetrazine is one of the appetite suppressants recommended by the National Institute of Health, National Heart Lung and Blood Institute, National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases.  Medications are for short-term, supervised use.  If prescribed as part of your program, this medication will help to curb your hunger and cravings and better allow you to adhere to the program.  For those patients for whom Phendimetrazine is not indicated, we will recommend a more natural supplement that will aid in appetite control.

Currently, all prescription medications to treat obesity are controlled substances, meaning health care practitioners need to follow particular restrictions when prescribing them. Although abuse and dependence are not common with non-amphetamine appetite-suppressant medications (such as Phendimetrazine), caution is taken with individuals whom have a history of alcohol or other drug abuse.

Our injections are a unique combination of vitamins and amino acids that supplement what the body needs to stay energized and nourished. They help eliminate fat, enhance metabolic function and boost immunity.  There is nothing within the injections that you do not already have in your body.  There are no preservatives either.

Remember, medication is completely optional for this program and is not indicated for all patients.

10. Can anyone take the appetite suppressant Phendimetrazine?

No, this medication is not indicated for every patient.  Some who are candidates for the medication may choose not to use it.  Contraindications are not limited to but include the following:

Glaucoma, concerning or abnormal EKG, valvular heart disease such as mitral valve prolapse/regurgitation, atrial fibrillation, cardiac arrhythmia, concurrent use of MAOI medication, systolic blood pressure >145, diastolic blood pressure >90, recent use of an appetite suppressant medication for >6 months out of a 12 month period, age <16 or >80 years old, history of pulmonary hypertension, documented prior cardiovascular or neurologic adverse reactions to an appetite suppressant medication, concurrent use of other stimulants (i.e. used to treat ADD/ADHD), pregnancy or planning pregnancy, breast feeding, history of substance abuse, history of anorexia or bulimia.
